Too often, performers are conditioned to think they have a "speaking voice" and a "singing voice." Yet, in fact, the voice we use to speak, laugh, cry, shout, scream, yawn, and call out, is the same voice we use to sing!

Joan Melton is a pioneer in the integration of singing techniques and voice training for the actor. Her work brings together the contrasting worlds of singing and acting training in an approach that is non-threatening, physically energizing, vocally freeing, and infinitely practical. You will experience a greater sense of ease and confidence, and gain a far clearer understanding of what it means to have a technique you can trust.

This three-day intensive is divided into six sessions:

Session I focuses on the foundational aspects of technique: alignment, breathing, range, resonance, articulation and connection, as outlined in ONE VOICE (Heinemann 2003).

Session II introduces cutting edge information and experiential work connecting the technical trainings of actors, singers and dancers.

Session III concentrates on the voice/movement relationship, integrating yoga, Pilates and dance to explore the whole physical/vocal instrument.

Session IV examines the physicality and phonetic representation of vowels and consonants in English. Dr. Diana Orbelo, CCC-SLP, from Mayo Clinic, will present a lecture on speech anatomy/physiology as an introduction to the focus on speech.

Session V synthesizes earlier work, as it introduces specific techniques for laughing, crying, shouting, screaming, and other extended voice use.

Session VI focuses on phrasing, for speaking and singing, and includes opportunities for individual and ensemble performance.

Please wear clothing that will allow you to move easily, and have sheet music available for songs that require accompaniment.
